Edwin Alexis Gómez is a Los Angeles-based, Queer Nicaraguan-American writer, director, producer and actor known for dramedies that rip your heart out. They go by he/they pronouns, but you can call him girl if there’s chisme. He left a career in non-profit to pursue writing and directing after his mother passed away from stage 4 breast cancer. They sew comedy and drama together in their work to help audiences heal, as a tribute to the life and legacy of his mother. Their stories typically center strong protagonists that lean into their LatAm and queer identities.
Gómez was a 2019 Playwriting Fellow for Lambda Literary Foundation’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices, a 2020 VONA Voices Fellow in Screenwriting, a participant of the inaugural 2020 Storylines Development workshop and the 2021 Script Revision workshop at Cine Qua Non Lab. Most recently, they were a fellow for the 2022 NHMC Series Scriptwriters program, and were just named a finalist for the SFFILM Rainin Grant, and a 2022 NALIP Latino Media Market fellow for their feature JOYRIDE.
His directorial debut QUÉDATE CALLADO (STAY SILENT) won a Grand Jury Award at the 2018 Outfest Fusion Film Festival. His sophomore short film LA SAD BOY premiered at the 2019 Outfest Film Festival, has screened internationally, and been featured in art exhibitions. Gómez’ latest short film JOYRIDE premiered at the 2020 PBS Short Film Festival and won the ‘Most Popular’ award. The film won ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast’ at the 2020 Official Latino Film and Arts Festival, a ‘LOLA Award’ at the 2021 Philadelphia Latino Film Festival and received a ‘Best Short Film’ nomination at the 2021 Imagen Awards.
They were an on-set Writer’s PA on the feminist anthology series ROAR (Apple+), and just wrapped being a Showrunners’ assistant on the children’s puppet cooking show WAFFLES + MOCHI (Netflix/Higher Ground). Se habla español.
